A guest post from Sam Johnson, our University of Manchester Client Representative, about the initial ground investigations for the Courtyard Project
Investigations at Manchester Museum for the Courtyard Project – we have now completed two site investigations in the courtyard area.
Two phases and more than a week’s worth of investigations in the courtyard area commenced with cutting through some very thick granite paving using a giant pink corer. The works then proceeded with boreholes (sampling the ground) and hand digging inspection pits (to determine existing foundation layouts and adequacy).
Samples are now in the lab for testing. The results of these two surveys will help us to understand the ground conditions to shape the design of the foundations and to consider the presence of any contaminants and how to deal with them.
What’s next? – internal surveys of the structure and hidden services.
