On 6th October, we headed down to the British Museum for one of our first content meetings for the new South Asia Gallery at Manchester Museum. Nick (Director of Manchester Museum), Steve (Curator of Living Cultures) and I met with colleagues at the British Museum for a thought provoking morning of discussion. For the first time we were joined by our Courtyard Project Architects, Purcell and the South Asia Gallery Designers, RAA.
It was a really productive meeting discussing the outputs of our recent academic workshop on South Asia, held in Manchester. We also started to think about content ideas that might appear in the gallery and the logistics of covering such a wide variety of history and geography.
It also provided a useful opportunity to showcase the wonderful British Museum collection to Purcell and RAA, who were able to get a feel for what the space might contain and potentially look like. We also had a great behind the scenes tour from Sushma (Curator Asian Ethnographic & South Asia Collections at the British Museum), who showed us examples of objects we might be able to consider for the new gallery.
